22 tons of clothing processed at Streams in the Desert Lutheran, Tucson

Pastor Tom Dunham of writes: “On Monday, July 22, two semi loads of clothing arrived from Pennsylvania at Streams in the Desert Lutheran Church in Tucson. The 44,000 pounds of clothing was unloaded by hand and stacked in the church’s storage shed in less than 3 hours. Members of Streams and many other area churches, totaling 50 volunteers, worked hard in the summer heat in this labor of love. Over the next three weeks trucks from McAllen, Texas to San Ysidro, California will be arriving to take loads of clothing back to the refugee and asylum centers along the Mexican border. We are truly the church together!”

I’m a Lutheran: Ryan Henry Mitstifer Walton

Ryan Henry Mitstifer Walton, member of Tanque Verde Lutheran Church, Tucson, Ariz. and a sophomore at Sabino High School, is featured in the May Living Lutheran.

Says Ryan: “I believe God subtly tries to push me to do things. While it’s not a force that controls me, I definitely feel God’s influence. My mom, Meredith Mitstifer, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer when she was pregnant with me. Given I shared space with cancer, I believe I have to do my part to advocate and help other women be informed about this silent killer.”

Moving graffiti from the streets to the steeple

From the Marana News: “Michael Schultz’s family was surprised he didn’t burst into flames when he walked into church. 

As a graffiti artist, Schultz estimates he painted 60 boxcars by the age of 17. Now, as an adult, his days of covert canvassing are behind him. Schultz, along with Pastor Lars Hammar, organizes Open Space Church, a location promoting a crossroads of art and faith for the Tucson community.” Read the full article »

The Lutheran Campus Ministry Board at the University of Arizona is pleased and happy to announce that the Grand Canyon Synod has called the Rev. Rebecca Boardman as the new Campus Pastor at the U of A. Rebecca will be relocating to Tucson in early June and plans to join us at the synod assembly.
