The Bishop’s Page

The Rev. Stephen Scott Talmage was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona.  He was confirmed and married at Calvary Lutheran Church in Tucson.  In 1981 he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona.  Stephen Talmage attended Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa and received a Master’s of Divinity in December of 1984.

Stephen was ordained at Christ the King Lutheran in Phoenix, in March 1985 and served as the Assistant Pastor for American Lutheran Church in Tucson, Arizona.  In September of the same year, he became the solo pastor, upon the retirement of the senior pastor.  In 1990 he accepted a call to Peace Lutheran Church, in Peoria, Arizona.  He faithfully served Peace for sixteen years as the solo pastor with numerous lay staff.

Stephen Talmage was elected to a six-year term as bishop during the Grand Canyon Synod Assembly in May 2006 and assumed office on August 1, 2006. He was elected to a second six-year term at the 2012 Grand Canyon Synod Assembly. His passion is Mission and Outreach and Discipleship and is intentional about developing missional leaders.  He supports the work of Cursillo and has served many times as a spiritual director on numerous weekends. Bishop Stephen Talmage and his wife, Barb, a retired Elementary Reading Specialist, have two adult children and one grandson.
