Church leadership can be both deeply rewarding and deeply demanding. That’s why Leading Well, an annual learning retreat designed for all who serve in faith-based ministries, blends sabbath rest, collegial support, and practical learning into a time of true renewal.
This year’s retreat will be held January 6–9, 2026, at the Franciscan Renewal Center in Scottsdale, AZ. Whether you are a pastor, deacon, youth leader, worship coordinator, children’s ministry leader, or serve in another ministry role, you are invited to participate in this ecumenical gathering that began within the ELCA and has now grown to include leaders from across Christian traditions.
What to Expect
Practical Learning: Sessions will focus on navigating leadership pivots, exploring theological shifts, reclaiming your deep “why,” and leading communities with purpose and hope.
Collegial Support: Retreat participants will join in group learning, coaching sessions, and meaningful connections with colleagues who share the challenges and joys of ministry.
Sabbath Rest: Each day balances learning with time for renewal — whether resting poolside, walking the grounds, or simply enjoying unhurried conversations with peers.
Rooted in Lutheran Theology, Open to All
As Lutherans, we recognize the call to sabbath and the richness of Christian community, especially in times of disruption. Leading Well creates space for God’s Spirit to restore weary leaders and to form new visions for ministry. Past participants note that the most transformative moments often came not only from presentations but also from conversations with fellow leaders, shaping new approaches to life and ministry.
At the close of the retreat, participants will leave with a Leadership Formation Plan tailored to their context, gifts, and present needs — and a renewed sense of energy for the work ahead.
Ongoing Community
Leading Well doesn’t end when the retreat concludes. Participants can stay connected through the Leading Well Facebook Group and the Surface to Soul app, where leaders share resources, encouragement, and continuing education throughout the year.
