As part of the 2025 ELCA Churchwide Assembly, all are invited to gather for a public candlelight prayer vigil on Wednesday, July 30 at 9:00 pm at Peace Park (400 E. Monroe St, Phoenix), hosted on the grounds of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix. The 30-minute program will follow the close of that day’s assembly business and is open to the public.
This sacred evening gathering will bring together more than 850 Lutherans from across the country—including bishops, voting members, and leaders from all 65 ELCA synods—as well as local congregations, judicatory heads from across faith traditions, and Arizona legislators. Together, we will lift our voices in prayer, music, and reflection.
The vigil theme is rooted in our shared calling to recognize and preserve the human dignity of all God’s people, with special attention to migrant, asylee, and refugee communities. These neighbors are at the heart of our call to love and serve as Christ commands. As Lutherans, we practice accompaniment: walking together in solidarity, listening deeply, and embodying God’s mission of justice, mercy, and welcome.
Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton will join other local and national faith leaders in offering brief reflections. Come stand in hope, faith, and commitment as we shine a light for justice and pray for a world where all are treated with dignity.
Please help us spread the word: promote this event in your congregation and invite friends and community members to attend.
