We pray for the family and friends of Rev. Jack Raymond Neimi, who passed peacefully at home on January 15, 2025. The primary memorial service for Pastor Niemi was held in California, with a smaller local service at Lord of Life Lutheran in Sun City West on March 20, 2025.

Pastor Niemi was born in Two Harbors MN, and lived in Surprise, Arizona. He was a member of Lord of Life in Sun City West. He served many churches in the Grand Canyon Synod.

We pray for the family and friends of Deacon Lorraine S. Brugh, who died Saturday, January 25, 2025. A memorial service was held Saturday, 2/22/2025 at Pinnacle Presbyterian.

Deacon Brugh was the Frederick J. Kruse Endowed Chair in Church Music at Valparaiso University. She helped lead the development of the ELCA’s Evangelical Lutheran Worship and was co-author of The Sunday Assembly, published in 2008 to help church leaders incorporate the hymnal’s materials into worship services. She was involved in the development of Lutheran music and worship practices for many years and is a past-president of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians. At our 2024 assembly, along with Deacon Kate Adelman, she organized Wild Life: A Hymn Festival.

We celebrated 75 years of ministry with American Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tucson, with a fiesta on Saturday, January 25, 2025. The event featured Parrita’s Mexican Food Truck, live flamenco music by Jon Banuelos, and family fun activities.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration of Diversity occurred on Sunday, January 19, 2025, from 3-5 pm in each respective time zone. Hosted at King of Glory Lutheran Church in Tempe, with Bishop Yehiel Curry preaching (watch live on King of Glory’s YouTube channel or at kogaz.org/watch), and Holy Spirit Lutheran Church in Las Vegas with a keynote from Elder Ender Austin, III (COGIC), this event invited us to come together to honor Dr. King’s legacy of justice, love, and unity.

The Grand Canyon Synod welcomed Deacon Laura Book as the Project Manager of the Synod Youth Advisory Team (SYAT). With a rich history in youth and young adult ministry, Deacon Laura will support the synod office, build youth ministry connections, and enhance faith formation initiatives. Rev. Paul Larson, lead pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Family in Carson City, NV, was appointed Advocacy Director for Lutheran Engagement and Advocacy in Nevada (LEAN). As the 83rd Nevada Legislative Session approaches, Rev. Larson will represent Lutheran voices on issues like immigration, food insecurity, and environmental care. His leadership promises to strengthen LEAN’s mission of justice and compassion. Rev. Charles Newman was installed at King of Glory Lutheran on Sunday, 2/23/2025. Bishop Hutterer preached and presided. The service was live-streamed on YouTube. A reception lunch followed, which coincided with the 55th anniversary Celebration of King of Glory.

Pastor Christine Stoxen of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Chandler, testified before the Arizona House Appropriations Committee in support of HB2191, the “Yes In God’s Back Yard” (YIGBY) bill. Representing Lutheran Advocacy Ministry Arizona (LAMA) and Valley Interfaith Project (VIP), she spoke on the critical role faith communities play in addressing Arizona’s housing crisis. On February 10, 200 Lutherans from 29 districts gathered at the Arizona State Capitol for a day of advocacy, meeting with over 40 lawmakers and speaking out on key issues. Martin E. Marty, one of the most influential interpreters of American religion, passed away on Feb. 25 at the age of 97. A scholar, historian, and theologian, Marty coined the term public theology, emphasizing the role of faith in the common good. His work in academia, public discourse, and church life left a lasting impact on American Protestantism and Lutheranism. The Grand Canyon Synod gathered on Sunday, March 9, at 10:00 a.m. at Love of Christ Lutheran Church in Mesa, Arizona, to celebrate Pastor Stephen Talmage’s 40th anniversary of ordination. From his early ministry in Tucson to his time as Bishop of the Grand Canyon Synod, and now as Senior Pastor at Love of Christ, Pastor Talmage has faithfully served with passion and dedication.

Martha Garner joined the Lutheran Advocacy Ministry Arizona (LAMA) Policy Council to represent northern Arizona. A longtime music educator, community leader, and active member of Living Christ Lutheran Church in Flagstaff, Martha brings deep experience in ministry and advocacy. Her faith journey—shaped by Rainbow Trail, Lutheran Campus Ministry, and CASA work—prepares her well for this new call to public witness. Pastor Dan Olson passed away on Friday, February 21, 2025. His wife, Barbara, preceded him in death just a couple of months earlier, on December 30, 2024. Their lives of faith and service was honored in a joint memorial service at Spirit of Grace Lutheran Church on Saturday, April 26, 2025. Pastor Dan’s brother, Paul Olson, a retired ELCA pastor, joined in leading this service of remembrance and thanksgiving.

Sponsored by Holy Cross Lutheran Church and the SE Michigan Synod, this acclaimed ELCA music ministry program nurtures children’s spiritual and musical growth. Perkins plans to bring what she learns back to enrich Desert Cross and its surrounding community.

Mountain View Lutheran Church celebrated 50 years of ministry with a special anniversary weekend on April 5-6! Celebrants attended the Anniversary Dinner and Worship Service on Saturday, followed by a special 9:00 AM worship service on Sunday, presided over by Bishop Deborah K. Hutterer. We pray for the friends and family of Deacon Ardie Senft passed away on May 3, 2025, at the age of 79. A memorial service was held on Saturday, May 17 at Living Water Lutheran Church in Scottsdale. Ardie served faithfully for over 30 years as a diaconal minister in the ELCA, embodying Christ’s call to serve others through teaching, pastoral care, and community leadership. Memorials may be directed to Arizona Faith Network and Feed My Starving Children.

The Rev. Christine Stoxen, pastor of Holy Trinity in Chandler, was named the 2025 recipient of the Bedenbaugh Award by Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. She was honored during Alumni Day at LTSS on May 1. Pastor Stoxen, a 2000 LTSS graduate, will offer remarks via video during a forum with Bishop Elizabeth Eaton.

The Grand Canyon Synod’s FY 2024-2025 Annual Report highlights a year of remarkable generosity and strategic development. The Mission and Ministry Fund grew nearly 8%, enabling us to double the number of ministries we support—from 8 to 16—particularly in underserved communities. Shepherd of the Desert Lutheran Church in Sun City partners with Community Action Market & Produce (C.A.M.P.) to bring fresh, rescued produce to neighbors across the Northwest Phoenix Valley. This nonprofit, run entirely by volunteers, distributes nutritious food through its Saturday Shop & Select markets, prepacked produce boxes, and delivery programs for the elderly and disabled—all with no income qualifications required.

Ascension Lutheran, Scottsdale and New Journey, Fountain Hills launched the second year of NEVC provision of lunches, water pallets, and electrolyte powder to Arizona Faith Network (AFN) cooling centers. Christ the Lord in Carefree, plus Living Water and New Covenant Lutheran Churches in Scottsdale join in the summer calendar of lunch packs.

The Rev. Yehiel Curry was elected July 30 as presiding bishop of the ELCA during the Churchwide Assembly in Phoenix. Elected on the fifth ballot with 562 votes, Curry becomes the first Black presiding bishop in the ELCA’s history. In a landmark decision at the 2025 Churchwide Assembly in Phoenix, the Rev. Lucille “CeCee” Mills was elected Secretary of the ELCA—the first Black leader to serve in this role. Mills, a TEEM graduate and assistant to the bishop in North Carolina, was elected on the fifth ballot and spoke of a new season for the church grounded in call, community, and God’s grace. Seventeen-year-old Kenny from Love of Christ in Mesa served as both a voting member and Election Committee member at the 2025 ELCA Churchwide Assembly in Phoenix. 140 volunteers from across our synod helped host the 2025 ELCA Churchwide Assembly in Phoenix, covering 651 shifts in 16 different roles. We offer our deepest thanks to all who served—and especially to Mary Beth Baron and Darcy Mittelstaedt—for helping our synod extend gracious hospitality to the wider church.

We mourn the death of James (Jim) William Krueger Jr., husband of Laura Krueger, president of the Grand Canyon Women of the ELCA. Jim, a lifelong Lutheran and dedicated volunteer, passed away on August 19, 2025, at age 73. His funeral service was held September 13 in Huntersville, NC. Kevin Anderson was ordained Wednesday, August 6, 2025 in the Sanctuary at Love of Christ Lutheran Church. Pastor Steve Talmage served as Assisting Minister, with Pastor Nanette Christofferson preaching, and Bishop Deborah Hutterer presiding. At Desert Cross Lutheran Church, holiday mornings have become ministry moments. What began as simple breakfast playdates in the park for young families has grown into an intergenerational tradition of fellowship, outreach, and joy. These gatherings remind us that church happens not only in sanctuaries but wherever God’s people meet in community.

NAU student and campus ministry leader Sarah Lee represented the Grand Canyon Synod at the International Seminar for Laypersons in Church Leadership in Wittenberg, Germany, and Geneva, Switzerland. From walking in Luther’s footsteps to advocating for LGBTQIA+ inclusion and meeting global Lutheran leaders, Sarah’s journey was a transformative experience in faith and leadership. She returns with renewed vision for campus ministry and gratitude for the synod’s investment in young adult leaders.

In 2025, the Grand Canyon Synod awarded $108,900 in grants to 19 ministries, funded through your mission support. From Talking Circles in Phoenix to a revived Summer Day Camp in Sedona and regional MLK worship services in Las Vegas and Tempe, your gifts are transforming lives across our synod. Kylee Bestenlehner was ordained at Christ the Servant Lutheran Churchon Saturday, 9/13/2025. Bishop Hutterer presided. Rev. Dr. Brooke Petersen of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago preached. Clergy and seminarians were invited to vest and process.

Pastor Brian Weinberger is home and continuing his recovery with the support of his family and congregation. His wife shares that having him back has been “wonderful for our entire family,” even as their days are now filled with ongoing appointments and long-term recovery needs. We give thanks for the prayers, encouragement, and financial gifts that have surrounded the Weinbergers and Bethlehem Lutheran Church, and we invite continued prayer for Pastor Brian’s healing and strength.

Representatives from the Grand Canyon Synod joined hunger leaders from across the church at the ELCA World Hunger Leadership Gathering in Columbus, OH, September 18–21. The event featured worship, experiential learning, and equipping sessions focused on building partnerships, engaging future generations, and connecting hunger ministry with issues such as climate justice, housing, and equity. A $6,000 gift from our Grand Canyon Synod—collected through donations and a contribution from the Global Engagement Team—is providing books for 180 students at our companion synod’s primary school in Fatick, Senegal. This tangible act of partnership ensures every child begins the school year equipped to learn.

We give thanks for leaders completing their service—Hannah Manazares, Taylor Welch, Roger Bailey, Janis Richert, and especially Vice President Barbara Carl, whose steady, strategic leadership guided us through seasons of change.

This fall, Bishop Deborah Hutterer began her first sabbatical, traveling to Malta with her husband Alan and continuing through January 2026. Sabbaticals are a best practice in the church, offering time for renewal, prayer, and grounding in God’s Word.

Our synod is well prepared for this season with strong leadership, stable systems, and Rev. Mike Girlinghouse on call for emergencies. Please keep Bishop Hutterer in prayer as she prepares for this sabbatical journey of rest, renewal, and hope.

This fall, Rev. Mike Girlinghouse will serve as Acting Bishop while Bishop Hutterer is on sabbatical. A former bishop of the Arkansas-Oklahoma Synod (2011–2023) and now Chaplain at LCM Canterbury at NAU in Flagstaff, Pastor Mike brings decades of leadership experience and will meet weekly with our Office of the Bishop staff.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America celebrated the installation of Bishop Yehiel Curry as its new presiding bishop on October 5, 2025, at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. The service—led by former Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton—featured a diverse assembly of leaders, choirs, and guests from across the ELCA and beyond. Rooted in joy and call, the celebration emphasized God’s invitation to serve in every context. Curry, formerly bishop of the Metropolitan Chicago Synod, succeeds Bishop Eaton in a six-year term.

We celebrated 80 years of ministry with Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Tucson during a History Walk on Saturday, October 25. Participants walked through key spaces on campus as congregation members reenacted moments from the church’s story, followed by a celebratory luncheon.

Our synod gathered at Faith–La Fe Evangelical Lutheran Church in Phoenix for a joyful 80th Anniversary Celebration, on October 24–26, 2025. The weekend included worship, music, fellowship, and food. Contributions are welcome toward the restoration of the pipe organ and church beautification.

Santa Cruz Lutheran Church in Tucson celebrated its 40th Anniversary October 11–12, 2025. Saturday included greetings, lunch, video presentations, history displays, cake, and mariachi music. Sunday’s worship, with Bishop Hutterer preaching, blessed a new youth-created banner and prayed for future generations. Join in giving thanks for 40 years of ministry!

The ELCA Conference of Bishops gathered in Minneapolis Oct. 5–7, following the installation of Presiding Bishop Yehiel Curry. Bishop Curry announced that his first-year focus will be on building “a connected church,” drawing from the image of Christ as the vine and the church as the branches. During the meeting, Bishop Hutterer began her term as chair of the conference. Bishops discussed communication and unity amid political polarization, received updates on task forces and global partnerships, and reflected on how to live faithfully as a connected, sustainable church.

Nearly every ELCA bishop—including Bishop Deborah Hutterer—signed a letter calling Lutherans to be a public witness of love and justice in a time of fear and division. The letter affirms that Christian Nationalism distorts the gospel and urges faithful action grounded in God’s inclusive love. Read the bishops’ full letter on the LAMA site.

The Grand Canyon Synod gives thanks for the life and ministry of Rev. Richard “Dick” Glover, retired pastor and member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Phoenix, who died on November 17, 2025. A Service of Life and Resurrection will be held Saturday, January 17, 2026, at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, with visitation at 10:30 a.m. and service at 11:00 a.m., followed by fellowship.

We invite the synod to hold Alice, the Glover family, and the St. Andrew community in prayer, trusting in God’s promises of baptismal grace, resurrection, and eternal peace in Christ.

The Grand Canyon Synod is celebrating a record year of leadership formation with six ordinations in 2025 and a seventh scheduled for December, including our first-ever two deacons in Word and Service Ministry. But, in today’s world where everything is fast, immediate and instantly available 24-7, I think we need the themes of Advent: waiting, watching and getting ready.

With deep sadness and in Christian hope, the Grand Canyon Synod shares the news of the death of Roger Bailey and his wife, Kristine. Roger was a faithful synod leader who served on Synod Council, the Executive Committee, and numerous teams, offering steady leadership and a hopeful vision for the church.

Kristine was deeply devoted to children’s ministry, serving regularly in Sunday school, children’s ministry, and Vacation Bible School, where her care and faith shaped many young lives. We invite prayers for their family, current and former members of Reformation/Living Hope and Community Lutheran Churches in Las Vegas, and all who grieve. Additional information, including memorial services, will be shared as it becomes available.

The Grand Canyon Synod joins the Iglesia Luterana Mexicana in mourning the death of Rev. Daniel Trejo, father of ILM Pastor President Rev. Roberto Trejo Haager, who died on December 1. A wake and devotional were held on December 2, and the funeral took place on December 3. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Our synod gathered for the Ordination and Installation of Wanda K. Frenchman on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at Grace Lutheran Church, Phoenix. Bishop Deborah Hutterer presided, and Vance Blackfox preached.

We joined Mount of Olives Lutheran Church on December 7 as Jazz Vespers celebrated its one-year anniversary of the Music for Food ministry, which has supported over 7,000 family units since last December. This month’s concert featured Beth Lederman and Sandra Bassett. Free admission; offerings support the Olive Branch Community of Hope Food Pantry.

The Grand Canyon Synod is developing a new Congregational Security & Preparedness resource page under our Congregation Resources section, at the request of Synod Vice President Mark Myers. This evolving hub will gather practical tools from ELCA churchwide resources, insurers like Brotherhood Mutual and Church Mutual, and federal partners such as the FBI to help congregations review building security, plan for emergencies, and respond wisely to threats or concerning behavior.

Councils, staff, ushers, and safety teams are encouraged to use these materials in conversation with local law enforcement, insurers, and legal counsel, taking simple first steps now while we continue to add and update resources.
