Grand Canyon Synod Update on Ongoing Federal Investigation

  • Public Update from the Office of the Bishop

  • October 28, 2025

The Grand Canyon Synod continues to cooperate fully with law enforcement and coordinate with ELCA churchwide organization leadership regarding the federal investigation involving former synod leader Casey Goslin.

As of this posting, there are no known victims within our synod, and all criminal allegations involve online activity. The investigation remains ongoing, led by ICE Homeland Security Investigations in cooperation with the Tucson Police Department.

We are committed to truth, transparency, and care as we move through this process. The Office of the Bishop, under the leadership of Acting Bishop Pastor Mike Girlinghouse, is following a clear communications and pastoral care plan that was prepared together with Bishop Deborah Hutterer prior to her sabbatical. This plan includes defined boundaries for when Bishop Hutterer will be contacted and ensures the continued, steady work of the synod.

Over the last week, the Office of the Bishop has reached out to congregational and ministry leaders across the synod, our Region 2 partners, ministry partners, and ecumenical colleagues to ensure clear communication and mutual support. That outreach continues in the weeks ahead. We are encouraging all leaders to cascade accurate information through their networks and to listen carefully for any concerns within their communities so we can respond with compassion and clarity.

Anyone in need of pastoral care or conversation during this time is invited to contact Acting Bishop Mike Girlinghouse (mgirlinghouse@gmail.com). Questions or communications regarding this situation may be directed to Brian Flatgard, Director of Communications, at bflatgard@gcsynod.org, or by contacting the Office of the Bishop.

We know this news has caused deep concern and sorrow for many. Even in difficult times, we trust that God’s Spirit continues to guide and sustain the Church. Together we remain rooted in our mission to Communicate Jesus, Connect People, and Create Possibilities—seeking truth with humility, offering care with courage, and walking forward in faith.
