Job Description

A Christian community that is welcoming, and affirming of all people, Spirit of Joy (SOJ) is a progressive Christian Congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America – ELCA, whose mission is to communicate the gospel of Jesus Christ to the world while empowering people to effectively love and serve others through community service, inclusivity, and social justice in or community. As our Choir/Bell Choir Director and Worship Leader, you will be an important part of a ministry team and can make a difference in the world by leading and inspiring people in worship and making the world a better place!

The ideal candidate will have strong leadership a passion for the ministry of the church and have a clear understanding that they are an integral part of the mission and success of SOJ. They will also have a proven history of exemplary hospitality, a friendly outgoing personality, be caring, creative and have excellent written and oral communication skills. It is essential that the candidate be highly organized, possess leadership skill, be creative, worshipful, and have a demonstrated record of working successfully with volunteer choir/bell choir members or equivalent. Finally, this role will assist the parish in its weekly worship gathering.

Education & Qualifications:

·      A Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music; preferred.

·      Minimum two years of experience within a church setting preferred

·      Collaborate with the Pastor to plan music to support Sunday Worship, and special Worship services: Funeral/Memorial Services (as requested)

·      Direct musical aspects of all worship services vocally from the piano, providing preludes, postludes, hymns, and music for congregational singing at appropriate parts of the worship.

·      Accompany the volunteer Choir

·      Direct the volunteer Bell Choir

·      Possess a high level of technical musical ability, be able to sight-read music, and successfully pass an audition.

·      The ability to provide Contemporary and Traditional styles of music preferred

·      Demonstrated the ability to maintain healthy, functional interpersonal relationships with parishioners, and staff, encouraging participation and growth in the use of their musical talents and service to the parish through the choir and bell choir.

·      Coordinate special music on occasion (parishioners who wish to play or sing)

·      Recruit volunteers to participate as able

·      Conduct oneself in a professional and business-like manner.

·      Pass a Background Check

Workload:

·      Conduct weekly practice for the Choir and Bell Choir – this is flexible and there is a summer recess.

·      Lead Sunday worship vocally from the piano.

Schedule:

·      (1) Weekly Worship Service on Sunday 8-9 AM and (1) Weekly 2 Hour Choir Rehearsal

  • Weekend availability – Sunday 8-9 am .
