Arizona Faith Network: Heat Relief, Democracy & Summer Action Opportunities
Arizona Faith Network (AFN) has released its latest newsletter, filled with opportunities for people of faith to engage in advocacy, service, civic participation, and community care across Arizona this summer.
At the center of this month’s updates are urgent efforts around extreme heat mitigation, election protection, and interfaith community-building—issues deeply connected to caring for neighbors and seeking the common good.
Among the highlights:
AFN’s Social Justice Commission meeting on Thursday, June 4 (8:30–9:45 a.m. MST via Zoom) will focus on Arizona’s 2026 Heat Relief Program, statewide heat mitigation efforts, and stories from faith communities providing life-saving care during Arizona’s dangerous summer temperatures.
AFN is also recruiting volunteers for its nonpartisan Election Protection program, seeking Poll Chaplains and Peacekeepers to help create safe, peaceful, and welcoming voting environments during the primary and general elections. No prior experience is required, and online trainings begin June 10.
Those interested in environmental justice are invited to a Snowbowl Information Session in Flagstaff on June 4 (5:30–7:30 p.m.), exploring the history, ecological concerns, and cultural impacts surrounding the San Francisco Peaks and Snowbowl expansion plans.
Additional opportunities include:
Faithful Voter AZ Committee (June 4) focused on voting rights and voter protection.
Monday Meditation gatherings each week at noon via Zoom.
An Interfaith Dialogue series beginning June 25, exploring shared values in American civic and spiritual life.
Bags of Hope Heat Relief Packing Events in Glendale (June 28) and Tucson (July 26) to support vulnerable neighbors during extreme heat.
A five-week summer book series, What it Takes to Heal: How Transforming Ourselves Can Change the World, beginning July 22.
AFN is also encouraging people across Arizona to advocate for continued state funding for extreme heat mitigation, as temporary federal pandemic-era funding expires at the end of 2026. Faith leaders and community members are invited to contact legislators and share stories about how extreme heat affects their communities.
In addition, Arizona nonprofit organizations may wish to note the June 12 application deadline for the State of Arizona Nonprofit Security Grant Program, which supports organizations at risk of hate crimes or targeted violence.
The newsletter also includes partner news, including a job opening with the Southwest Conference of the United Church of Christ and an update on photographer and former AFN board member Eric Ledermann.
