Titled “Beyond Sobriety: The Practice That Sustains Recovery,” this webinar features Barry Lehman, a pastor, counselor, and musician with decades of experience in long-term recovery. Lehman, who has been sober since 1988, brings both professional and lived wisdom to the conversation, drawing from over 30 years in counseling and his recent retirement from Mayo Clinic Addictions Services.

This conversation moves beyond the question of how to achieve sobriety and instead focuses on how to sustain and deepen a life of recovery. Lehman will explore:

  • How people actually grow over time

  • Why practice—not just insight or belief—is essential for lasting recovery

  • What it means to build a life that continues to expand in meaning, purpose, and direction

As Lutherans, we understand faith not simply as belief, but as a lived and embodied trust in God—one that takes shape in daily practices, community, and ongoing transformation. This webinar offers a thoughtful and practical framework for walking alongside those in recovery, recognizing that healing is not a one-time event but a lifelong journey shaped by grace.

Lehman is also the author of the award-winning book Mastering Recovery, and his work centers on helping people cultivate lives marked by depth, meaning, and steady direction.

Whether you are in recovery, walking with someone who is, or seeking to deepen your congregation’s understanding of addiction and healing, this webinar offers valuable insight grounded in both faith and experience.
