A Summer to Remember at Camp ALOMA
For over five decades, Camp ALOMA (Arizona Lutheran Outdoor Ministry Association) has welcomed children from across the Grand Canyon Synod into a place of spiritual growth, outdoor adventure, and lifelong friendships. This summer was no different – filled with laughter, learning, and unforgettable memories. Let’s hear from some of our incredible campers!
Anna-Belle, Age 10--6th Grade
This was Anna-Belle’s fourth summer at camp – and her busiest yet! She attended three weeks this year and made tons of new friends along the way. For Anna-Belle, camp is a highlight of her year – more special than weekly Sunday school, because of its once-a-year magic.
Her favorite activity? Bouldering! And her favorite memory? Repeatedly falling with her friends during a night game and laughing uncontrollably. It’s the little moments of joy that make camp so meaningful.
Mae, Age 12-- 8th Grade
Mae also joined for three weeks this year and found that each week felt different despite similar schedules – thanks to the unique people and energy each group brought.
She too loves bouldering, but this summer was especially impactful spiritually. Through Bible studies, Mae connected deeply with a story in Luke’s Gospel on forgiveness, gaining a new perspective and a stronger bond with God.
Her most unforgettable moment? An improv dance performance at the variety show that ended with a hilarious fall. Her cabin renamed it “The Massive Fall” – turning an accident into a beloved memory. Mae dreams of becoming a camp counselor – and maybe even a pastor – one day.
Lucas, Age 12 – 7th Grade
Lucas experienced his first summer at Camp ALOMA, and it left a big impression. While he enjoys his church youth group, the outdoor setting, extended time, and fresh environment helped deepen his faith in a new way. He noted that learning about God outside of a classroom was much preferred.
Coming from Arizona’s desert, the rainy camp days were an exciting change. But his top memory? His first-ever canoeing adventure – a fun and meaningful milestone.
Maddie, Age 8 – 3rd Grade
Also a first-timer, Maddie attended camp with her sister and four church friends. What made camp special for her was the overnight format where there was more time to learn about God.
She loved the water balloon fights and arts & crafts, especially making a beaded lizard that she treasures. Daily Bible studies focused on the Good Samaritan, exploring the story from new angles. Maddie says it helped her see people differently – a powerful realization for such a young heart.
Reagan, Age 12 – 7th Grade
This was Reagan’s first time at Camp ALOMA, but she’s no stranger to Bible camps. What stood out to her was the deeper relationships she formed, thanks to the camp’s longer sessions.
Reagan’s favorite activity was Capture the Flag, especially because she enjoys games that test individual strategy. Spiritually, she loved being able to ask challenging faith questions, which were thoughtfully addressed by the camp pastor.
Her funniest memory? The time a chipmunk ran into her cabin and jumped on her bed! While others screamed, Reagan was calm and amused. A camp story she'll never forget!
Final Words
These stories are just a glimpse of what God is doing at Camp ALOMA. Whether it's a first-timer finding joy in canoeing or a seasoned camper discovering a deeper meaning in Scripture, each child leaves with a heart full of memories and a stronger sense of faith.
Thank you to our camp staff, counselors, volunteers, and supporters for making this summer possible.
