Campus ministry alive and thriving

All three Grand Canyon Synod campus ministries are back at it as never before....literally as never before! ASU, NAU & U of A are employing a hybrid outreach. (NAU has a few more restrictions as they are required to follow the Episcopal directives regarding gatherings). The picture you see is a recent ASU socially distant meal (tables are 6 foot tables set 7 feet apart).  Students were also given a choice of eating in the Campus Center or "Grab 'N Go". Both options were utilized by students. All told 17 persons were fed.  Campus ministries are employing Zoom Bible Studies and discussion groups along with some socially distant groups. Soon U of A and ASU will also be able to meet outside for meals and programs. For the first time in 41 years we were not able to gather together over Labor Day Weekend in San Diego on retreat.

The pandemic has not caused worship for students to cease, it has only moved worship to online (info on our websites). Worship at our campus ministries is offered from once a week to twice weekly depending upon the campus.

Campus ministries also maintain much needed and frequently used food pantries for students. The national average for US university students experiencing food anxiety in any given week is about 33%. Arizona university students sadly are close to the average national rate. Food pantries and regular meal service is a huge outreach and ministry to students.

Our numbers may be down this year with many students remaining at home, but the significance may actually be on the rise as we regularly help students struggling with their new and often frustrating situations. Here is only one "for instance": An out of state ASU student arrives in early August to move into his dorm. All classes for this freshman are to be in-person. Six days after move-in classes begin. On that day the student is told all  of this freshman's classes were changed to online. They could have remained at home, but there are no refunds or credits offered for dorm rent and meal plan. Campus Ministry became a very welcome friend as one of very few positive introductions to college life for this freshman.

Thank you, Grand Canyon Synod for your support, your prayers, and, above all, your students! (the freshman previously mentioned was referred here by their pastor) We continue to work hard to serve the students, faculty, and staff of our respective universities. We very much see ourselves as an extension of your congregation. If we can be of help in any way, please contact us.

Student referrals are always welcome!
