Capture the Spirit: National Photo Contest Celebrates Sacred Spaces

From August 15 to October 15, photographers nationwide—both amateur and professional—are invited to capture how historic churches, synagogues, meetinghouses, temples, and mosques serve as vibrant community spaces beyond worship.

The contest theme, “Third Place: Sacred Places Serving Their Neighborhoods,” celebrates faith communities as “third places”—those essential gathering spaces outside of home and work where people connect, learn, and belong. Four categories offer room for creativity:

  • The Arts – Performances, exhibits, and cultural programs hosted in sacred spaces

  • Education and Service – Tutoring, classes, outreach, and social services

  • Open Space – Gardens, courtyards, and public-access grounds

  • Community Events – Festivals, markets, and neighborhood gatherings

Prizes of up to $500 will be awarded, with winners announced after the contest closes October 15.

This is a chance to highlight the role of sacred places as trusted centers of community life—a role deeply rooted in Lutheran tradition, where church buildings are not just houses of worship but living gifts to their neighborhoods.
