Cheer, Give, Repeat: Turning Game Day Into a Win Against Hunger

While you’re cheering on your team and celebrating with family and friends, ELCA congregations and supporters across the country are coming together for something even bigger: tackling hunger in Jesus’ name.

From now until the final whistle on February 8, two synods — Team Northwest Washington and Team New England— are facing off in a friendly fundraising rivalry to support ELCA World Hunger. The goal is simple: whichever team inspires the most giving through its team page by midnight Central time on February 8 will earn the title of ELCA World Hunger Champion — regardless of what happens on the field.

This playful competition reminds us of a deeper Lutheran truth: our calling to love our neighbors is not seasonal, symbolic, or dependent on winning. Whether your favorite formation is 3–4, 4–3, or John 3:16, every gift — from nickels and dimes to larger offerings — helps put food on tables and hope into communities around the world.

ELCA World Hunger addresses hunger’s root causes through sustainable, community-led solutions both in the United States and globally. When we give, we participate in God’s ongoing work of justice, compassion, and daily bread for all.

You can take part right now by choosing a team and making a gift:

As Lutherans, we believe that faith is active in love. This is a simple, joyful way to live that out — together — while the game is on, the snacks are out, and the gospel is still at work.
