Elizabeth Cote’s YAGM Journey in Senegal: Faith, Culture, and Service

Elizabeth Cote, a YAGM volunteer through the ELCA, shares her transformative experience in Senegal. From learning Wolof and adapting to rural life in Linguere to serving in a healthcare clinic and teaching English, Elizabeth reflects on living out her Lutheran faith through cross-cultural service. Discover her insights on Senegalese values like teranga (hospitality) and how they shape her mission. Read more about Elizabeth’s journey and how you can support her ministry in her first newsletter and second newsletter.

Salaam Malekum! Elizabeth Cote, a Young Adult in Global Mission (YAGM) volunteer through the ELCA, shares her journey of faith, service, and cultural immersion in Senegal. Currently serving in Linguere, Elizabeth is adjusting to a life filled with challenges, joys, and profound learning experiences.

Elizabeth began her mission in Dakar, immersing herself in Senegalese culture, learning Wolof, and exploring key cultural values such as teranga—the Senegalese spirit of hospitality. Transitioning to Linguere, a small rural town, she now serves in a healthcare clinic and teaches English at a Catholic elementary school. Her work includes assisting orphans and families impacted by HIV/AIDS, reflecting the Lutheran church’s commitment to compassion and service.

Life in Linguere brings unique challenges, such as navigating language barriers and adapting to a simpler lifestyle. However, Elizabeth highlights the joy of being welcomed into her host family and the community. She shares how her family’s Catholic faith and Serer heritage enrich her understanding of Senegalese culture and deepen her own faith journey.

Elizabeth’s favorite moments include celebrating local traditions, teaching children, and participating in support groups for those in need. Her story invites us to reflect on what it means to live out our Lutheran faith in global contexts, embracing the beauty of cross-cultural relationships and service.

As Christmas approaches, Elizabeth continues to ask for prayers for strength and guidance. To follow her journey and support her mission, visit her support page or the YAGM Facebook page.
