From the Bishop's Gathering to Your Bookshelf: The Power of Civil Dialogue

In today’s world, where civility often seems like a forgotten art, "Hot Topics, Cool Heads: A Handbook for Civil Dialogue" emerges as a beacon of hope and practical guidance. Authored by John Genette, Jennifer A. Linde (who presented at our 2022 Bishop’s Fall Gathering), and Clark D. Olson (a member of a Grand Canyon Synod congregation), this book is an essential resource for anyone looking to navigate contentious conversations with grace and understanding.

The need for civility is evident everywhere, from family discussions to political debates. What sets this book apart is its focus on defining civility from a communication perspective and offering tangible tools to practice it. The authors, founders of the Institute for Civil Dialogue, delve deep into the roots of societal incivility, outlining the traits of a civil communicator and emphasizing the critical role of civil listening.

One of the book's highlights is the introduction of Civil Dialogue®, a method facilitating discussions on contentious issues. This approach, which Jennifer Linde presented to pastors at the 2022 Bishop's Fall gathering, is designed to encourage understanding across different viewpoints without necessarily aiming for agreement. Its unique semi-circle format and “rules of civility” provide a structured yet open environment where diverse opinions can be expressed and heard.

The appendices of the book include the fundamentals of Civil Dialogue, making it adaptable to various contexts. Whether the topic is politics, religion, or any other sensitive subject, "Hot Topics, Cool Heads" equips readers with the skills to engage in meaningful, respectful conversations. This book is not just about avoiding conflict; it’s about enhancing understanding and laying a stronger foundation for democracy.

Incorporating this resource into our "Creating Space for Conversations" page, we recognize its immense value in fostering respectful dialogues in our communities.
