Why ELEA Matters for the Church

Across the ELCA, more than 17,000 educators serve over 140,000 children in Lutheran schools and early learning centers. These ministries are not separate from the church’s mission — they are central to it.

ELEA exists to connect, develop, and inspire leaders in these ministries, strengthening the church’s witness through education and faith formation. Whether your congregation has a school or not, this work shapes the future of the church by nurturing faith in daily life.

A Year of Connection and Growth

The 2025 report highlights a year marked by deepened relationships and expanded impact:

  • A growing network of 265 member schools, with strong long-term participation

  • National and regional gatherings, including the OH25 National Conference and new “Lunch & Learn” events

  • Expanded communications reach, with over 114,000 social media views and a 45% email open rate

  • Continued investment in leadership development, collaboration, and shared learning

At the same time, ELEA names real challenges, including school closures and financial pressures, and recommits to strengthening connections so that no ministry stands alone.

Nurturing Faith Beyond the Classroom

One of the most important initiatives highlighted in both the report and video is the Nurturing Faith Study Series — a resource designed for all congregations, whether or not they have a school.

This work reflects a deeply Lutheran understanding of faith formation: that faith is nurtured not only in sanctuaries, but in homes, classrooms, and communities. Through research, coaching, and shared learning, ELEA is helping congregations rediscover their role in forming faith across generations.

A Connected Future for the Church

ELEA’s partnerships across the ELCA — including collaboration with churchwide ministries, advocacy efforts, and emerging connections with colleges and universities — point toward a more connected and integrated future.

This aligns closely with the broader vision of the church: that we are not isolated ministries, but one body working together to proclaim the gospel and serve our neighbors.

Explore and Share

ELEA has invited synods and congregations to watch, download, and share these resources widely. This is an opportunity not only to learn, but to reflect on how your congregation participates in nurturing faith.
