Heat Relief Ministry Returns This Summer at Grace and First UCC in Phoenix
As temperatures rise across the Valley, Grace Lutheran Church and First United Church of Christ are once again partnering to offer Heat Relief ministry for some of our most vulnerable neighbors this summer. Read a letter from Pastor David Sivecz here.
The seasonal respite program will run June 1 through August 24, providing a safe, cool indoor space every day from 11 a.m.–7 p.m. First UCC will host Sunday through Wednesday, while Grace Lutheran will host Thursday through Saturday. Guests will receive water, electrolytes, snacks, hospitality, and a welcoming community during the hottest months of the year.
Each location will be staffed with a lead staff person, an assistant, and a safety specialist as congregations and volunteers work together to care for neighbors experiencing extreme heat and housing insecurity.
Congregations across the synod are invited to support this ministry through donations of much-needed supplies, including:
Cases of water
Sports drinks and Propel packets
Cooling towels and sunscreen packets
Granola bars, crackers, dried fruit, fruit cups, trail mix, chips, popcorn, mini muffins, bananas, oranges, and similar snacks
Pet food (dry kibble or individually packaged wet food without foil tins)
Organizers ask donors to avoid foil packaging whenever possible, as it creates challenges in the ministry setting.
There is also an opportunity to provide frozen burritos for guests. Unlike sandwiches, burritos can be frozen and reheated safely throughout the summer season.
“This ministry is possible because of the generosity of congregations and individuals who show up for neighbors in need,” Pastor David Sivecz shared. “Whether dropping off a case of water or bringing 50 burritos, every contribution helps.”

In a season of dangerous heat, this ministry is a tangible expression of Christ’s care for the neighbor — a reminder that, together, we are “Church Together.”
