Honoring Native American Heritage Month: Events from ELCA Indigenous Ministries

November is Native American Heritage Month, a time for communities across the ELCA to honor the stories, resilience, and leadership of Indigenous peoples. As followers of Christ, we remember that our commitment to justice calls us to listen deeply, learn generously, and walk alongside our Indigenous siblings working for healing and liberation.

Racial Justice Ministries and ELCA Indigenous Ministries & Tribal Relations are lifting up a series of events that invite prayer, learning, and remembrance.

15th Annual Vine Deloria Jr. Symposium

October 11–15, 2025

Hosted online by the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago

This annual gathering explores topics related to Indigenous identity, theology, history, and justice, honoring the legacy of Vine Deloria Jr. (Standing Rock Sioux)—scholar, writer, and theologian whose work continues to shape Native studies and church engagement. Participants can expect thoughtful presentations, storytelling, and community-centered discussion.

National Day of Mourning

November 27, 2025 at 12:00 p.m. (Noon)

Patuxet (Plymouth), Massachusetts

The National Day of Mourning acknowledges the historical trauma Native peoples have endured and continue to experience. It is a solemn call to reflect, lament, and commit ourselves to dismantling systems of injustice. This in-person gathering invites solidarity with Indigenous communities seeking truth-telling and healing.

Why It Matters

As Lutherans, we confess our participation in systems that have harmed Indigenous peoples, and we seek to turn toward a future that reflects Christ’s justice. These events offer grounded opportunities to learn, reflect, and take faithful action.
