House of Prayer dedicates new altar

On Sunday, June 19, 2022, members and special guests dedicated a new altar at House of Prayer. The celebration included comments and memories from Suzie DeFassio recalling Pastor Daniel’s love and commitment to ‘all things Native.’ She recalled family reunions at the Mission and the joy of time spent among the Navajo people.

The altar table is fabricated from live-edge cypress, in-filled with turquoise. Darius Charley, a well-known Navajo artist with Rock Point roots, crafted the table to fulfill the desires of the congregation to have the worship space reflect forms of nature and cultural beauty. Darius works from his studio in Albuquerque, is the recipient of multiple awards for his artistry, and is recognized as among the best of Navajo artisans.

Following the dedication, everyone enjoyed stew and frybread, Father’s Day gifts, and opportunity to share stories with our guests.

The Baptism Font and Lectern are just weeks away from completion and we look forward to the dedication of these important and symbolic representations of Navajo thought, faith, and creativity.
