A rarely observed part of the church year will come to life in Phoenix this May as Faith-La Fe Evangelical Lutheran Church hosts a Vigil of Pentecost worship service on Saturday, May 23 at 10:30 a.m., the day before Pentecost Sunday.

Held at Faith-La Fe Evangelical Lutheran Church, 801 E. Camelback Road in north central Phoenix, the service will offer worshipers an opportunity to gather in prayerful anticipation of Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit.

Designed in the spirit of Lessons and Carols, the liturgy will include scripture readings connected to the coming of the Spirit alongside Pentecost hymns and songs reflecting the diversity of Christian worship traditions from around the world. The service draws inspiration from the Day of Pentecost itself, when the gospel was proclaimed among the nations in many languages.

The liturgy will also feature a kind of “reverse Tenebrae,” with candles being lit rather than extinguished, recalling the Spirit descending like tongues of flame upon the disciples.

As the church waits between Easter and Pentecost, participants will gather in vigilant prayer much like the disciples did in the days before the Spirit’s arrival. Organizers describe the service as a moment to pray with hope for a world longing for peace, healing, and renewal.

“Our world waits for an end to war and violence. The whole creation waits for an end to suffering,” the invitation reads. “With undying hope, we will pray for the crowning gift of Easter—the Spirit of the risen Christ among us.”

All are invited to attend this unique and prayerful observance as the church prepares to celebrate Pentecost.
