LAMA Update: Voting, Oak Flat, Hunger Action, and Ways to Get Involved

An updated ELCA Advocacy Action Alert on the SAVE America Act. ELCA Advocacy is encouraging people concerned about potential barriers to eligible voters to contact members of Congress about the legislation.
Continued advocacy concerning Oak Flat. LAMA highlights opportunities for people of faith to pray and take action concerning Oak Flat, sacred Indigenous land in Arizona.
Election protection opportunities. Arizona Faith Network is offering training for volunteers interested in serving as nonpartisan Poll Chaplains and Peacekeepers. Upcoming training opportunities include September 9, 17 and 25 from 6–7:30 p.m., along with Poll Chaplain/Peacekeeper training September 28 from 4–5:15 p.m.
LAMA Liaison Roundtable. Congregational LAMA liaisons and others interested in advocacy can gather via Zoom on Monday, September 21, from 6:30–7:30 p.m. to discuss congregational engagement in advocacy.
A special Hunger Leaders Network gathering. On Tuesday, September 29, from 6–7 p.m., hunger leaders from the Grand Canyon Synod and beyond are invited to a special hunger education gathering featuring Grand Canyon Synod Bishop Deborah Hutterer, Sierra Pacific Synod Bishop Jeff Johnson, Saint Mary’s Food Bank CEO Milt Liu, the Rev. Nelson Rabell-Gonzalez, and others.
The newsletter also features LAMA’s 2026 Voter Guide, available in English and Spanish; information about Arizona’s voter registration deadline; guidance for congregations interested in hosting strictly nonpartisan candidate forums; information about voting by mail; an exploration of why local city council elections matter; and resources for Hunger Action Month.
