Leading Well: Discover the Patient Way of Jesus

Leading Well, a learning retreat January 5–8, 2027, at the Franciscan Renewal Center in Scottsdale, invites church leaders to explore “The Patient Way of Jesus: Reclaiming ‘Slow Church’ in a Fast-Paced World.” For Grand Canyon Synod rostered ministers and lay leaders, it offers an opportunity to begin the year with practical learning, collegial support, and Sabbath rest.

In a culture that rewards speed and constant activity, this theme invites us to consider how patience shapes faithful ministry. Through a Lutheran lens, Sabbath reminds us that our worth rests in God’s grace rather than our productivity—freeing us to receive rest and serve our neighbors with renewed attention.

Retreat sessions will explore:

  • Stepping away from ministry’s pressures: “An Invitation to Step Away From the Bell Tower Before You Land in the Cuckoo’s Nest”

  • Patience as creative practice

  • Creating rhythms of evangelism and discipleship

  • Growing a generous and giving church

  • Making radical hospitality part of your church’s culture

Participants can share ideas through collaborative activities, receive complimentary coaching, and build relationships during free time and nightly hospitality gatherings. Daily worship and opportunities to practice Sabbath provide space for prayer, reflection, and renewal. Unscheduled time allows for hiking, sightseeing, reading, or simply resting.

Location: Franciscan Renewal Center, 5802 E. Lincoln Drive, Scottsdale, AZ 85253.
