Learn and Discern: How Lutherans Approach Difficult Decisions

How does Lutheran faith shape the way we approach difficult questions? In week two of our Learn and Discernseries, “Lutheran Ethics, Nuances in Context” explores that question with the Rev. Dr. Kathryn “Kit” Kleinhans and host Mitch McCartney. Listening time: 21 minutes, available anytime.

Their conversation considers faith and works, Lutheran “both/and” thinking, love of neighbor, justice, public ethics, and discernment in community. These themes offer context for the ELCA’s reconsideration of Human Sexuality: Gift and Trust.

At the heart of Lutheran faith is God’s grace, freely given in Christ. Our care for others grows from that gift. Ethical reflection asks how we live out this faith in relationships, congregations, and public life.

That reflection can be demanding when people who share a faith reach different conclusions. Across the Grand Canyon Synod, we can bring our convictions into conversation while remaining curious about how another person understands their responsibility to God and neighbor.

This week’s invitation: After listening, consider: How does my understanding of grace shape the way I speak with someone whose convictions differ from mine?

Use the ELCA’s Conscience and Conversation study for further reflection. You can also explore the reconsideration process or listen to the full podcast series.

Next week, we take a closer look at “bound conscience.”
