Navajo Lutheran Mission: Flood Recovery Continues, Your Help Is Needed

Navajo Lutheran Mission (NELM) continues to respond to devastating flooding in Rock Point, Arizona, where hundreds of households have been evacuated and families face urgent needs for food, supplies, shelter, and recovery assistance. Deacon Kate Adelman shares an update on the ongoing challenges and ways congregations and individuals throughout the Grand Canyon Synod can help.

Financial donations remain the Mission’s most immediate need, providing flexibility to purchase firewood, fuel for tractors and pumps, food, building materials, and other essential supplies. NELM has also partnered with Givelink, allowing supporters to purchase specific relief items that will be delivered directly to the Mission.

Recovery in Rock Point

According to the Navajo Nation, more than 700 households in Rock Point were evacuated following torrential rains and severe flooding. Families and elders have been displaced, homes damaged, livestock scattered, and access to essential supplies disrupted.

The Mission itself sustained significant water damage to the House of Prayer, office basement, and maintenance shed. Floodwaters also affected the parking lot, playground, and access roads.

For more than 70 years, Navajo Lutheran Mission has served as a source of support, encouragement, and love for its Navajo neighbors. That commitment continues as the community faces a difficult recovery.

Deacon Kate Adelman, who works in donor relations for the Mission, writes:

"We cannot allow devastating flood waters to deter Navajo Lutheran Mission from serving those whose lives have been disrupted and whose homes have been destroyed."

How You Can Help

Financial gifts are the highest priority. Donations give the Mission the flexibility to respond to changing needs as recovery continues.

Supporters can also visit the NELM Givelink page to purchase needed items, including cleaning products, clothing, diapers, tools, and hygiene kits. Items purchased through the wishlist are sent directly to the Mission.

Congregations are encouraged to share this opportunity in worship bulletins, newsletters, and announcements. A downloadable QR code for the Givelink wishlist is included in the photo gallery accompanying this article.

New Photos from Rock Point

Our updated photo gallery includes images shared by Navajo Lutheran Mission on November 3, documenting the impact of the flooding and the community's ongoing recovery.

As members of the Grand Canyon Synod, we are called to accompany our neighbors in times of hardship through prayer, generosity, and tangible acts of love.

In Kate’s words, "Your kindness can translate into tangible assistance."

God’s work. Our hands.
