Oktoberfest Spirit Fuels Lutheran Social Services of Nevada’s Mission

Compassion in Action: LSSN Rises to Meet Growing Need

As the demand for food and assistance grows across Las Vegas, Lutheran Social Services of Nevada (LSSN) continues to be a steadfast beacon of hope. President and CEO Tim Bedwell shared that many community members report other pantries have closed or reduced service, making LSSN an essential lifeline for families in need.

“Clients tell us LSSN provides the best food of any pantry they’ve visited,” Bedwell said. “As word spreads, more and more families are turning to us for support.”

LSSN’s ability to keep pace with this increasing need is possible only through the generosity of partners like Three Square and local grocery stores, whose daily deliveries sustain operations. Bedwell expressed heartfelt gratitude to the community for standing alongside LSSN during challenging times—including the recent government shutdown.

One highlight this season was an unforgettable Oktoberfest celebration, hosted by Rev. Dr. Marta Poling Schmitt, LSSN Board Secretary, and her husband, Stefan Schmitt. The event combined food, fellowship, and music to raise crucial support for LSSN’s mission. More than $6,000 was raised before the event, with over $30,000 pledged or donated during Oktoberfest.

“Stefan and I were honored to open our home,” said Rev. Dr. Schmitt. “We also launched the 1985 Society, a new leadership giving initiative named for LSSN’s founding 40 years ago. This community’s generosity inspires us daily.”

Upcoming Programs and Community Partnerships

Warm Wishes Program – October 22, Noon–3 PM

As temperatures drop, LSSN’s annual Warm Wishes Project provides blankets, jackets, hats, and warm clothing for adults and children. Donations of gently used or new items are welcome at 4323 Boulder Hwy, Las Vegas, NV 89121.

SHE CARES Initiative

LSSN’s She Cares program continues to be one of its most beloved ministries, offering essential hygiene items that uphold dignity and health for those in need. LSSN extends heartfelt thanks to Christ the Servant Lutheran Church for preparing hundreds of ready-to-serve hygiene kits under Pastor Diane’s leadership, reminding us that compassion often begins in small, thoughtful acts of service.

Together, these efforts reflect how Lutheran partnerships bring hope and tangible care to our neighbors in need. As Bedwell shared, “Your kindness and generosity are making a direct impact in the lives of those we serve. Thank you for standing with us.”
