Serve This Fall: LSS-SW’s September Volunteer Update
Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest invites volunteers and congregations to help with October service projects in Phoenix and Tucson and begin collecting Christmas gifts for Arizona neighbors. To sign up, coordinate a donation drive, or ask questions, email volunteers@lss-sw.org.
As Lutherans, we understand service as a response to God’s grace. These opportunities offer practical ways to live out that calling through care for our neighbors.
October volunteer opportunities
Phoenix: Fall Festival activity packing
Help prepare take-home activities for children on Tuesday, October 13, 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m., at the LSS-SW office, 3636 N. Central Ave., Suite 300, Phoenix. Ask to connect with Lane to sign up.
Tucson: Days of Caring
LSS-SW is partnering with United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona on three projects. Ask to connect with Jessica to participate:
Employment preparation: Wednesday, October 14, 3–4:30 p.m. Five volunteers are needed to help refugee clients build résumés, practice interviews, and complete draft job applications at 3777 E. Broadway Blvd., Tucson.
Storage cleanup: Friday, October 16, 9–11 a.m. Five to 10 volunteers are needed to clean two storage units and move furniture into a box truck. Heavy lifting is required; location to be announced.
Community food distribution: Saturday, October 17, 12:30–3 p.m. Five to 10 volunteers are needed to pack and distribute food boxes at Freedom Park, 5000 E. 29th St., Tucson.
Help meet Christmas gift goals
LSS-SW seeks at least 500 towel sets and gifts for 800 children. Congregations and individuals can contribute:
New towels for older adults: Each recipient should receive at least two bath towels and two hand towels. Cheerful or dark colors are preferred; no white towels.
New gifts for children and teens: Toys, games, sporting equipment, arts and crafts, and gift cards are welcome.
Unwrapped donations are due December 14 at 1 p.m. Earlier donations are appreciated. Email the volunteer team to coordinate drop-off arrangements and let them know if your congregation plans a drive.
Thank you to Tanque Verde Lutheran Church in Tucson for already collecting and sorting towels and toys, and to New Covenant in Scottsdale and Grand Canyon Synod WELCA for committing to towel drives.
Thrivent members can also explore applying for up to $250 in Action Team funding to support a service project or fundraiser. Volunteer Jo Riester has used this resource for Christmas donations, essential supplies, and activities with refugee women.
More ways to participate
Ongoing opportunities in Phoenix and Tucson include mentoring refugee youth ages 15–24 and providing individual English tutoring. Tucson also needs sewing and jewelry instructors.
LSS-SW will again participate in the Light the World Giving Machines, hosted by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This year’s location is La Encantada Shopping Center, 2905 E. Skyline Dr., Tucson, with listed hours of 9 a.m.–8 p.m. during the event. Holiday dates are forthcoming.
