Spirit in the Desert Prepares for a Season of Renewal
As we move through the late-summer heat, Spirit in the Desert continues its mission of providing sacred space for rest, renewal, and reconnection. While July brought fewer guests than usual, the team remained busy improving campus facilities and planning for a vibrant fall and winter season.
Recent campus upgrades include installing new door locks and replacing flooring in the Estrem building—essential improvements that enhance both safety and hospitality. The heat brought its own challenges, including the unexpected need to replace an A/C compressor during a 10-day retreat and make emergency repairs to the walk-in refrigerator. Through it all, Spirit staff remain focused on serving guests and preparing for what’s next.
Fall and winter retreats are already taking shape. Highlights include:
ThanksLiving Weekend – A celebration of music, food, and community: www.SITDmusic.com
Executive Skills for Church Leaders – In collaboration with California Lutheran University.
Living into a New Story – A retreat led by Pr. Ron Rude on faith and the natural sciences.

Executive Director Eric Simonson also extends deep gratitude to all who supported the campus lock upgrade. With each door costing approximately $900, contributions are still welcome.
Also in this month’s news, Managing Director Denise Berberich checks in from her summer in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. From morning walks with her brother to North Loop adventures and lake-cabin rest, Denise is soaking in the season while staying connected to Spirit’s mission.
