Author Drew Strait Joins Spirited Book Club Conversation on Strange Worship

Christian nationalism continues to challenge both democratic life and the church’s public witness. This February, the Spirited Book Club at Spirit in the Desert offers a timely and engaging opportunity to reflect faithfully—and with a special guest. Learn more and register here.

We are delighted to share that author Drew J. Strait will join the Spirited Book Club conversation to discuss his widely acclaimed book, Strange Worship: Six Steps for Challenging Christian Nationalism.

📅 Thursday, February 26

🕒 3:00–4:00 pm Arizona (MST) | 2:00 pm Pacific

🎙 Facilitated by Sheri Brown

📖 Featuring special guest: Drew J. Strait

In Strange Worship, Strait names Christian nationalism as a theological crisis—a form of distorted worship that confuses allegiance to nation with allegiance to God. Rather than stopping at diagnosis, the book offers six practical, faith-centered steps for resisting political idolatry, countering violent extremism, confronting dominion theology, and addressing the fear and isolation that often fuel radicalization.

Drawing from biblical studies, theology, and peace and security studies, Strait equips congregations to disrupt theologies of oppression and reimagine worship that forms communities grounded in humility, courage, and justice. His work resonates deeply with Lutheran commitments to the gospel’s freedom, the neighbor’s well-being, and a church rooted in grace rather than coercive power.

Strait brings a rich ecumenical background—shaped by Catholic, Methodist, Evangelical, Reformed, and Anabaptist traditions—and a pastoral heart for creating learning spaces where Christians can wrestle honestly with hard questions while remaining grounded in the way of Jesus.

Whether you are a rostered minister, congregational leader, or engaged layperson seeking faithful ways to respond to the rise of Christian nationalism, this conversation offers both clarity and hope.

It’s not too late to register—and there’s still time to read the book before February 26. Participants are encouraged to come ready for thoughtful discussion and shared discernment.
