ELCA Church Council Welcomes 19 New Members and Takes Key Actions

At its October 2–3 meeting in Minneapolis, the ELCA Church Council welcomed 19 new members elected at the 2025 Churchwide Assembly and took significant actions on several memorials. These included authorizing work on a social policy resolution related to abortion, reviewing a proposal for a social message on rural and tribal communities, and reaffirming the church’s commitment to justice for Palestinians and Israelis.

The council also conferred the title presiding bishop emerita on the Rev. Elizabeth Eaton, appointed the Rev. Wyvetta Bullock as interim executive for administration, and approved an issue paper on artificial intelligence. Church Council Sets Direction for 2025 ELCA Assembly in Phoenix

The ELCA Church Council met April 3–6 in Chicago to shape the agenda for the 2025 Churchwide Assembly, coming to Phoenix this July. The council received the final report from the Commission for a Renewed Lutheran Church and recommended major actions related to diversity, governance, finances, and the proposed social statement Faith and Civic Life: Seeking the Well-being of All.

ELCA Church Council Considers Legislative Proposals for the 2025 Churchwide Assembly

The Church Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) gathered at the Lutheran Center in Chicago, Nov. 14-17. The council, which serves as the ELCA churchwide organization’s board of directors and interim legislative authority between meetings of a churchwide assembly, focused much of its work on preparations for the ELCA 2025 Churchwide Assembly.

In her report to the council, ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton spoke of God’s Love Made Real as the umbrella for the church’s vision of “a world experiencing the difference God’s grace and love in Christ make for all people and creation.” The vision calls for two distinct strategies for the church moving forward: the church that is and the church that is becoming.
