Dear Friends in Christ,

At the heart of our life together as a synod is a simple but powerful calling: to tell the story of God at work among us.

This year’s theme, “Rooted in God’s Story,” reminds us that we are not only participants in that story—we are also called to share it. Through worship, service, relationships, and everyday ministry, God’s work is unfolding across our congregations, our communities, and our lives. The role of communications is to help that story be seen, heard, and carried forward.

A Rhythm That Connects Us

Over the past year, our communications ministry has continued to operate through a steady and reliable rhythm:

  • Daily posts on the synod blog

  • Ongoing sharing through Facebook

  • A weekly newsletter connecting approximately 1,700 readers

Each week, this rhythm gathers the life of the synod—news, events, ministry stories, resources, and opportunities—and places it into the hands of leaders and members across Arizona, southern Nevada, Utah, and the Navajo Nation.

This work is not about volume for its own sake. It is about connection. It ensures that no congregation stands alone, and that the work of one ministry can encourage and inspire another.

A System Built on Trust

Most of the time, communications work happens quietly in the background. It lives in planning calendars, organizing data, building webpages, and coordinating information across many partners.

But this year reminded us why that work matters.

In moments of uncertainty and increased public attention, people turned to the synod looking for clarity and truth. What mattered most was not how quickly we responded, but whether we were trusted.

That trust was not created in a single moment. It was built over time—through consistent communication, transparency, and a commitment to sharing accurate and meaningful information week after week.

Our systems held. Our message remained clear. And our shared commitment to honesty and care guided every step.

Supporting the Work of the Church

Communications is often most visible during major synod events, particularly Synod Assembly.

Behind the scenes, this includes:

  • Managing registration and event communications

  • Building and maintaining the assembly website

  • Coordinating scripts, presentations, and materials

  • Supporting worship, workshops, and plenary sessions

  • Sharing stories and updates before, during, and after the event

Much of this work is unseen, but it serves a clear purpose: to create an environment where the focus can remain on worship, community, and the shared work of the church.

Lifting Up the Stories That Matter

One of the most meaningful parts of this work is sharing the stories of our congregations and ministry partners.

This year, we have lifted up stories of:

  • Congregations expanding food and care ministries

  • Leaders walking alongside communities in times of challenge

  • New and creative expressions of ministry taking shape

  • Faithful, everyday acts of service that often go unnoticed

Again and again, we are reminded that what may feel like ordinary work in one place becomes a source of encouragement and hope when shared across the synod.

As one ministry partner recently expressed, “Thank you for making our ministry your ministry.”

That simple phrase captures the heart of this work.

Looking Ahead

As we gather for Synod Assembly, we do so with gratitude for a communications system that is steady, adaptable, and grounded in purpose.

More importantly, we gather as a people rooted in God’s story—called to listen, to discern, and to participate in what God is doing among us.

Communications will continue to support that calling by:

  • Providing clear and consistent information

  • Strengthening connections across the synod

  • Amplifying the voices and ministries of our people

  • And helping us tell the story we share in Christ

Gratitude

I am deeply grateful for the partnership of the Office of the Bishop, Synod Council, synod staff, and leaders across our congregations and ministries.

This work is not done alone. It is made possible by the many people who submit stories, share updates, provide feedback, and trust us to carry those stories forward.

Together, we are not just communicating information.

We are telling the story of God’s work among us.

And that is a story worth sharing.

In Christ,
—Brian Flatgard
