Unwine Your Mind: A January Reset for Body, Mind, and Spirit

Modeled after Dry January, this January Reset is flexible and judgment-free. Participants are invited to either go fully alcohol-free for 30 days or commit to a meaningful reduction—paying close attention to how they feel physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s clarity.
It’s an opportunity to step off autopilot and honestly reflect on our relationship with alcohol—without guilt, shame, or cultural noise.
Why this matters—especially now
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, alcohol consumption in the U.S. has increased significantly, particularly among women. Heavy drinking among women rose sharply during the pandemic, and alcohol-related deaths among women have increased faster than among men. Stress, isolation, caregiving pressures, and the normalization of “wine culture” have all contributed.
Clergy and faith leaders are not immune. In fact, many are in high-risk categories—public-facing, emotionally taxed, chronically exhausted, and often lacking safe spaces to process their own struggles. From a Lutheran perspective, caring for the body and tending the spirit are deeply connected. This January Reset offers space for honest reflection and faithful self-care.
What even one month can do
Research shows that just 30 days of abstinence or significant reduction can lead to measurable benefits, including:
Improved sleep and energy
Reduced anxiety and inflammation
Better mood regulation
Clearer thinking and deeper spiritual presence
Weight stabilization
Early liver regeneration
Lower blood pressure and resting heart rate
You don’t need to “have a problem” to benefit. Sometimes, a pause is simply a faithful way of listening—to your body, your spirit, and God’s quiet invitations.
