AFN News: Annual Gathering Registration Opens, Plus Upcoming Events
The latest Arizona Faith Network (AFN) newsletter is packed with opportunities for Grand Canyon Synod congregations and leaders to learn, connect and work alongside people of faith and goodwill across Arizona. Among the highlights: registration is now open for AFN’s 2026 Annual Gathering on Tuesday, October 20, along with upcoming programs on digital security, elder abuse, election protection and peacemaking.
This year’s AFN Annual Gathering, “From Conflict to Community: Building Courageous Unity in a Time of Division,” will bring together faith leaders, community organizers, civic partners and people of goodwill for relationship-building and conversation about responding to polarization, political violence, fear and isolation. Keynote speaker Rev. Dr. Gary Mason, a Methodist minister and internationally recognized peacebuilder from Belfast, Northern Ireland, will draw on decades of experience helping communities build trust across deep divisions.
Closer on the calendar, AFN’s Digital Security Workshop 2.0 takes place Thursday, August 27, from noon to 1:15 p.m. Arizona time on Zoom. Digital security expert and investigative technology reporter Yael Grauer will offer practical guidance for protecting websites, CRM systems and sensitive information and responding to common cyber threats. The workshop costs $10 for Safe Communities Coalition members and $15 for non-members.
On Tuesday, September 1, from noon to 1 p.m., AFN will host a virtual Lunch & Learn on Domestic Violence and Elder Abuse. Presenters from Safe Havens will explore how faith communities can recognize and respond to elder abuse, particularly among marginalized populations, and how clergy and lay leaders can become compassionate listeners and trusted sources of referrals.
AFN is also recruiting Poll Chaplains and Peacekeepers for Arizona’s November general election. Volunteers in this nonpartisan Election Protection program help foster safe, welcoming and peaceful environments where eligible voters can participate with dignity. No previous experience is required, and training will be offered on multiple dates in September and October.
Other opportunities highlighted this week include AFN’s Monday Meditation gatherings, an August 25 program on Muslim scholar titles, the 15th Annual 9/11 Multi-Faith Food Drive, and a September 18 Peacemaking Summit in Mesa featuring author and law professor Steven T. Collis.
Through these opportunities, Arizona Faith Network invites people from many traditions into the shared work of strengthening communities, serving our neighbors and building relationships across difference—work that resonates deeply with our Lutheran vocation to seek peace, justice and the common good.
