LAMA Update: Put Advocacy Into “God’s Work. Our Hands.” Sunday
The August 11 edition of the Lutheran Advocacy Ministry Arizona (LAMA) newsletter is now available, with new opportunities for Grand Canyon Synod congregations and leaders to put faith into action through advocacy, education and community engagement.
Leading this week’s issue is an invitation to prepare for “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday on September 13 by adding advocacy to your congregation’s service. LAMA offers five easy ways to advocate for neighbors who are hungry, unhoused, uninsured, excluded or unheard—connecting the work of our hands with our Lutheran calling to seek justice and love and serve our neighbors.
The newsletter also highlights several upcoming opportunities to learn and connect, including the LAMA Liaison Roundtable on August 17 at 6:30 p.m., the Grand Canyon Synod Hunger Leaders Network on August 25 at 6 p.m., and a Digital Security Workshop on August 27 at noon focused on protecting congregations and organizations.
Additional September opportunities include an interfaith conversation on domestic violence and elder abuse and gatherings of the Arizona Faith Network Social Justice Commission and Faithful Voter AZ committee.
This edition also includes several new advocacy resources and action opportunities. Readers can learn about the ELCA’s reconsideration of its 1990 social message on homelessness—with comments invited through November 30, 2026—as well as a new ELCA craftivism resource and Election Engagement Toolkit. Other articles offer resources for contacting Arizona’s 2026 candidates, examine the Voting Rights Act 61 years after its passage, invite advocacy for refugee resettlement, and suggest simple ways to contact members of Congress during the August recess.
