Beyond Our Church Walls: A Practical Guide for Ministry in a Connected World
A new book by Arizona Lutheran and longtime technology leader William “Bill” Kalaf aims to help congregations use technology thoughtfully, faithfully, and missionally—without losing sight of what matters most.
Beyond Our Church Walls: Technology, Collaboration, and Discipleship for Small and Medium-Sized Churches is now available and is written specifically for pastors, congregational leaders, and church members who may not consider themselves technology experts but want to strengthen ministry in an increasingly connected world.
Rather than focusing on technology for technology’s sake, Kalaf’s book explores how churches can use communication tools, collaboration systems, digital ministry practices, and organizational processes to support discipleship, outreach, stewardship, and community engagement. The emphasis is on practical, sustainable approaches that fit a congregation’s mission, theology, size, and context.
Kalaf, a retired law-enforcement technology executive and lifelong Lutheran, says the book grew out of a conviction that many congregations face a growing “digital gap” between available tools and their ability to use them effectively in ministry.
Written in accessible language, the book can be read cover-to-cover as a leadership resource or used as a reference guide for specific topics such as communication, outreach, collaboration, planning, and security. It also includes questions and discussion prompts designed for pastors, church councils, ministry teams, and congregational leaders.
The book may be particularly valuable for small and medium-sized congregations seeking practical ways to strengthen ministry capacity while remaining grounded in their calling to proclaim the gospel and serve their communities.
Many Grand Canyon Synod leaders will also recognize Kalaf’s commitment to thoughtful engagement between faith and public life through his earlier book, The Cross and the Flag: How Christian Nationalism Is Reshaping American Religion and Democracy.
In addition to publishing the book, Kalaf is offering his experience and assistance to Lutheran congregations throughout the Grand Canyon Synod at no cost.
“I am here to help you, the Synod, leadership, and congregations where needed,” Kalaf shared. “I offer my experience for free to Lutheran congregations. It’s important.”
Congregations interested in learning more, discussing ministry technology questions, or exploring ways to strengthen communication and collaboration efforts are encouraged to reach out directly.
