Final Push for Churchwide Assembly Volunteers—See Where We Still Need You

The Grand Canyon Synod is honored to host the 2025 ELCA Churchwide Assembly, taking place July 28–August 2 at the Phoenix Convention Center. This vital triennial gathering brings together nearly 1,000 Lutherans from across the ELCA to worship, deliberate, elect leaders, and make key decisions that shape the church’s future.

We need your help. Up to 100 volunteer positions must be filled—many still remain open. Whether you’re greeting visitors at the airport, distributing tech in the plenary hall, directing people to seats during worship, or handing out water during the evening vigil, your presence matters. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to represent our synod with radical hospitality and faithful service.

Key open roles and dates include:

  • Tech & Distribution Support: July 28 – August 2 (various shifts)

  • Airport Greeters: July 26–28 (help welcome guests at Sky Harbor)

  • Door Monitors: July 28, 30, August 1–2

  • Prayer Vigil Support: July 30, 9–10 PM

  • Dining Hosts & General Volunteers: Flexible shifts available

  • Pre-Assembly Prep: Saturday, July 26

In the video and live session, Volunteer Coordinator Mary Beth Baron outlines volunteer expectations, answers FAQs, and walks you through what to expect.

Volunteers receive free parking downtown (if needed), snacks, a volunteer badge, and the deep satisfaction of being part of something much larger than any one of us. Lodging and meals are not included, though discounted hotel rates are available.

As Lutherans, we are called to show up in community, with presence, faith, and love. This assembly is a chance to live that out on a churchwide scale—right here in Phoenix.

Will you join us?

Help us show the ELCA what welcome looks like in the desert.
