In a time marked by uncertainty and shifting realities, Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest invites you into an important and timely conversation: how we can faithfully support refugee families right now.

On Wednesday, April 1 from 11:30am to 1:00pm (Arizona Time), this live Zoom webinar—Supporting Refugees in a Time of Uncertainty—will offer both essential updates and practical, actionable ways for individuals and congregations to respond.

This is an opportunity to hear directly from those engaged in this work and to deepen our shared commitment to welcome the stranger—a calling deeply rooted in our faith and identity as Lutherans.

What You’ll Learn

Participants will gain insight into:

  • The current refugee resettlement process and recent changes

  • How Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest is actively supporting refugee families

  • The journey toward permanent residency (green card process)

  • Common barriers refugees face as they rebuild their lives

  • What to know if a refugee interacts with law enforcement or ICE

  • Meaningful, practical ways you and your congregation can respond

When registering, you’ll also have the opportunity to submit questions in advance, helping shape the conversation around what matters most to you and your community.

Featured Guest Speaker

The webinar will feature Valentina Restrepo-Montoya, Esq., Executive Director and CEO of Arizona Legal Women and Youth Services (ALWAYS). Her work centers on advocating for survivors of trafficking and young people impacted by crime, housing insecurity, and foster care—offering a critical legal and human perspective on the challenges facing vulnerable populations, including refugees.

Why This Matters

As people of faith, we are called to be rooted in God’s story—a story that consistently points toward hospitality, justice, and accompaniment. In this moment, supporting refugees is not abstract; it is a tangible expression of the Gospel in action.

This webinar equips us to move from concern to informed, faithful response—both individually and as congregations across the Grand Canyon Synod.
