From Voting to Hunger Advocacy: What Lutherans Need to Know This Week
This week’s Lutheran Advocacy Ministry Arizona (LAMA) newsletter is filled with timely opportunities for faithful public witness, advocacy, and action across Arizona and the Grand Canyon Synod.
With Arizona’s primary election approaching on July 21, LAMA’s top Action Alert encourages voters to double-check voter registration status and request a ballot, especially for independent voters. The voter registration deadline is June 22, making now an important time to prepare and help neighbors do the same.
The newsletter also highlights several opportunities for Lutherans and congregations to engage issues of justice and public life through a faith-centered lens. Upcoming events include an Anti-Hunger & Food Systems Advocacy Call on June 12, the monthly LAMA Liaison Roundtable on June 15, and a June 24 webinar exploring the rise of for-profit immigration detention, featuring theological reflection and practical ways churches can respond faithfully.
Congregational hunger leaders are also invited to the Grand Canyon Synod Hunger Leaders Network gathering on June 30, where leaders from across the synod collaborate on local hunger responses and share ideas for ministry.
As election season approaches, LAMA is also helping equip communities through Poll Chaplain and Peacekeeper Training on July 13, inviting both lay and rostered leaders to support safe, welcoming voting experiences for vulnerable populations.
The newsletter’s featured blog stories offer additional opportunities for learning and action, including advocacy around immigration funding, the Farm Bill, election preparedness, hunger initiatives, and a thoughtful reflection on Lutheran public witness through the lens of Living Lutheran’s article, “Publicly, boldly and honestly: The long arc of Lutheran activism.”
Lutherans have long understood faith as something lived not only in worship, but also in service to neighbors and care for the common good. This week’s LAMA newsletter offers meaningful ways to put faith into action.
