Protecting Democracy, Caring for Neighbors: This Week from AFN
Arizona Faith Network’s latest newsletter offers multiple ways for people of faith to live out public witness through service, civic engagement, and care for neighbors across Arizona.
A major focus this season is Election Protection, with AFN recruiting Poll Chaplains and Peacekeepers to help foster calm, welcoming, and safe voting environments during Arizona’s primary and general elections. No prior experience is required, and online trainings begin June 10, with additional opportunities throughout the summer.
The newsletter also highlights ways communities can respond to Arizona’s ongoing extreme heat crisis. AFN is advocating for long-term state funding for cooling centers, transportation, and emergency heat relief infrastructure while also inviting volunteers to participate in “Bags of Hope” interfaith packing events in Glendale on June 28 and Tucson on July 26, helping provide heat-relief supplies to vulnerable neighbors.
For those seeking opportunities for spiritual formation and dialogue, AFN continues its Monday Meditation gatherings, launches a new interfaith series on “Shared Values in American Scripture” beginning June 25, and opens registration for a summer book study, What it Takes to Heal: How Transforming Ourselves Can Change the World, beginning July 22.
Additional calls to action include opportunities to advocate for the protection of sacred land at Oak Flat, support funding for heat mitigation efforts in Arizona, and participate in local and national efforts around elder justice.
As Lutherans committed to loving and serving neighbors, many of these opportunities reflect deeply held values of accompaniment, justice, dignity, and civic participation rooted in faith.
