Heat Relief, Healing, Democracy, and Dialogue: This Week from AFN

This week’s newsletter from Arizona Faith Network (AFN) highlights several opportunities for people of faith to engage issues affecting Arizona communities through learning, dialogue, justice, and care for neighbor.

As Arizona enters another season of dangerous heat, AFN and partners are hosting a Thursday, May 21 Zoom briefing on public funding for cooling centers, exploring what is currently happening in state budget negotiations and how people of faith can support continued investment in life-saving heat relief.

AFN also invites participation in a number of upcoming opportunities centered on healing, safety, democracy, and interfaith understanding.

Upcoming events include:

  • “Managing Internal Security Threats” (May 27), featuring guidance from the FBI for faith and community leaders on internal safety concerns.

  • A five-week summer book series beginning May 27, What It Takes to Heal: How Transforming Ourselves Can Change the World, focused on embodiment, healing, and community transformation.

  • Interfaith Dialogue: Shared Values in American Scripture (May 28), a conversation exploring the promises, tensions, and complexities of the American story through a faith lens.

  • A June 4 Snowbowl information session in Flagstaff, examining ecological, cultural, and Indigenous concerns related to proposed expansion.

  • Opportunities to support hydration stations in Pima County, helping vulnerable neighbors endure Arizona’s dangerous summer heat.

AFN’s partner updates also include ways to engage efforts to protect voting access in Arizona, documentary screenings focused on Navajo resilience and nuclear legacy, and a Pride Month documentary exploring LGBTQIA+ belonging within faith communities.

For Lutherans, public life is one place where faith takes shape through service, accompaniment, and courageous conversation. Whether through creation care, democracy, public safety, immigration, or care for vulnerable neighbors, these opportunities invite us to live out our baptismal calling in community.

We encourage Grand Canyon Synod congregations and leaders to explore the full Arizona Faith Network newsletter for additional details, registration links, and ways to engage.
