New Guide Helps Congregations Respond Faithfully to Addiction and Recovery

Addiction touches every community—including our congregations. Many churches care deeply about people affected by addiction but feel unsure how to begin responding in meaningful ways.

A new resource from the Center of Addiction & Faith aims to help congregations move from concern to action.

The Rev. Dr. Ed Treat, founder and Executive Director of the Center of Addiction & Faith, has written a practical guide titled Faith Communities and Addiction Recovery. Designed as a field manual for congregations, the book offers clear, step-by-step guidance to help faith communities better understand addiction, reduce stigma, and build sustainable ministries that support recovery.

The guide combines theological reflection with practical tools, helping church leaders and members think faithfully about addiction while also equipping them with concrete steps for ministry. The resource is intended for congregations that want to respond compassionately but may not know where to start.

Addiction continues to affect families, neighborhoods, and communities throughout our region. As people of faith, congregations have an opportunity to offer hospitality, understanding, and support for those seeking healing and recovery. Resources like this can help churches take faithful first steps toward becoming places of welcome and hope.
