Reference and Counsel Report Now Available for Synod Assembly Review

As preparations continue for the 2026 Grand Canyon Synod Assembly, the Assembly’s Reference and Counsel Committee has released its report, including the resolution submitted prior to this year’s deadline for consideration by voting members. The materials are now available for review ahead of assembly.

The report includes Resolution 26.01, submitted by the Grand Canyon Synod Council, related to whether the synod should enter a year of discernment regarding becoming a Reconciling in Christ (RIC) Synod. The committee notes that the resolution will be brought before the assembly without recommendation.

Importantly, if adopted, the resolution would not make the Grand Canyon Synod an RIC Synod. Rather, it would begin a one-year process of listening, education, and discernment, with any potential vote on becoming an RIC Synod taking place at the 2027 Synod Assembly.

Several important clarifications have also been emphasized throughout this conversation:

  • Congregational autonomy remains intact

  • No doctrinal change is being proposed

  • No congregation would be required to become RIC

The proposed resolution explicitly notes that a synod becoming Reconciling in Christ “does not require or automatically mean that all congregations must be RIC partners.”

Members of the synod are encouraged to review the report and resolution prayerfully as part of preparation for Synod Assembly.
