Shared Scripture, Stronger Relationships: Conference Experiments Ahead

The Grand Canyon Synod is trying new approaches to conference gatherings and shared leadership this year, with plans to assess them together in spring 2027. Following the September 15–17 Conference Deans retreat, synod leaders proposed a joint monthly gathering for two conferences and weekly Scripture study groups to strengthen relationships among pastors and deacons.

The conversations acknowledged two challenges: finding time for colleagues to gather and finding pastors able to serve as conference deans. The synod’s constitutional conference structure dates to 1987. As ministry and communication have changed, leaders see an opportunity to explore approaches that make connection meaningful and sustainable.

Rio Salado and Fiesta Conferences will try gathering together monthly, in person at King of Glory Lutheran Church, hosted by Pastor Charles Newman. The gatherings will offer space for conversation, mutual support, and fellowship.

Weekly study groups will offer another way to connect across the synod. Pastor Tina Mills has offered to host a Narrative Lectionary Bible study, and a leader is being sought for a Revised Common Lectionary study. These groups will bring colleagues together around Scripture, preaching, and worship preparation, with shared interests and ministry needs helping shape participation.

Rooted in God’s Word, these experiments reflect our Lutheran commitment to mutual encouragement and walking together as the church. They also invite us to consider how leadership can support the relationships that sustain ministry.

The Kino Conference currently has no dean. Those interested in serving, helping lead either study group, or suggesting other ways to strengthen collegial relationships are encouraged to contact the bishop.

Gathering schedules and study details are still to come. Over the coming months, leaders will learn what works, make adjustments, and evaluate the experiments together in the spring.
