This Holy Week, Mountain View Lutheran Church in Phoenix invites you into a powerful, self-guided experience of prayer and reflection through “The Way of the Cross: A Time of Meditation and Prayer.” Open to all, this daylong opportunity offers space to pause, pray, and walk alongside Jesus on his journey to the cross.
Set within the sanctuary, the experience features seven stations that may be visited in order—or at your own pace. Each station includes a painting, Scripture reading, meditation, and prayer, guiding participants through Christ’s suffering while inviting reflection on our own lives and the realities of the world around us.
The meditations intentionally hold two perspectives:
The suffering of Jesus along the way to the cross
The suffering present in our world and in our personal lives today
Participants are invited to consider: Where do I find myself in this story? The accompanying prayers offer space to bring before Christ the burdens, questions, and hopes we carry.
This experience reflects a deeply Lutheran understanding of the cross—not only as a historical event, but as a present reality in which Christ meets us in suffering and calls us into honest relationship with God. As we journey through Lent toward Easter, we are reminded that we are a people shaped by both the cross and the promise of resurrection.
The artwork featured in the stations comes from Sieger Köder (1925–2016), a renowned German Christian artist whose work brings vivid emotional and theological depth to the story of Christ’s passion. The meditations and prayers, originally written by Theo Schmidkonz, SJ, have been translated into English to make this experience accessible to all.
