In Memoriam: Rev. Douglas Moffat
It is with deep sorrow and Christian hope that we share the news of the death of the Rev. Douglas “Doug” Moffat, who died on January 12, 2026, in Edmonton, Canada. Doug’s last day of service at Faith Lutheran Church was March 12, 2025. We commend him to God’s eternal care and hold his family and loved ones in prayer.
He had a heart for the lost and the seekers and believed strongly in the Alpha program. It was a positive and safe place to learn and ask questions about Jesus. He would be honored if any memorial gift in his name be given to the Alpha organization. US donations can be made here. Canadian donations can be made here.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 6th, 2026, at 1:00 pm at St. Albert Evangelical Church, 11 Glenview Cres, St. Albert, Alberta T8N 1B7. Reception to follow.
Doug’s wife, Barbara, shared the following words with the synod:
“It is with a breaking heart that I share the news of my beloved Doug. Yesterday, he went home to heaven. He was surrounded by all his family, Paul and Diana, Josh and Sophie, Lili and Margo. He recognized us and smiled. He slipped away in comfort and peace.
He fought the good fight with this short illness.
Doug had a strong faith and a great commitment to the Gospel. While intubated he wrote several notes. One of the last ones he wrote said this: Never forget those who live without hope!”
These words reflect Doug’s life and ministry: a pastor shaped by the promise of the resurrection, committed to proclaiming Christ, and attentive to those on the margins—especially those who struggle to find hope. His faith was not abstract or distant, but lived, written, and spoken even in his final days.
Doug served faithfully in the church, including his most recent call at Faith Lutheran Church, where his pastoral presence and devotion to the Gospel were evident to all who knew him. We give thanks for his ministry, his witness, and the many lives touched through his preaching, teaching, and care.
At this time, no service information is available. Those wishing to send cards or notes of condolence to Barbara may contact the Office of the Bishop for mailing information.
As we grieve, we also trust in the promise we proclaim as Lutherans: that nothing—not even death—can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. May Doug rest in peace, and may light perpetual shine upon him.
“O God of grace and glory, we remember before you our brother, Rev. Doug Moffat. We thank you for giving him to us to know and to love as a companion in our pilgrimage on earth. In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn. Give us faith to see that death has been swallowed up in the victory of our Lord, Jesus Christ, so that we may live in confidence and hope until, by your call, we are gathered to our heavenly home in the company of all your saints; through Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord.”
