Rooted at the Table: A Look at the Recipes Coming In
The table is beginning to fill.
As part of the Rooted at the Table recipe project, recipes are already arriving from across the Grand Canyon Synod—each one offering a glimpse into the life, culture, and community of our congregations.
So far, we’ve received submissions from communities in Phoenix, Tempe, Scottsdale, and Fountain Hills, with more arriving each week. The collection is already reflecting the diversity and personality of our synod’s shared table.
A few early highlights include:
Phyllis Salem’s Tabbouli, shared by Theresa Thornburgh (Phoenix)
Chicken Pot Pie, from Pr. Jacqui Pagel (King of Glory, Tempe)
Oatmeal Cookies, a family recipe from Julie Yates (Scottsdale)
“Oh Boy” Waffles, shared by Bishop Deborah Hutterer (Phoenix)
Harry and Sharon Vaughan’s Bread Pudding, from Kris Bartanen (Fountain Hills)
These recipes span main dishes, desserts, baked goods, and cultural favorites, and many come with meaningful stories—recipes learned from parents, shared across generations, or connected to ministry and community life.
Each submission adds something unique to the growing collection. Together, they begin to tell a broader story of who we are as a synod—people who gather, share, and care for one another around the table.
This is exactly the vision behind Rooted at the Table—not just a cookbook, but a shared resource that reflects the many ways we experience community, hospitality, and grace in everyday life.
All recipes submitted will be published online, creating a collection for the whole synod. A curated selection will also be included in the printed cookbook connected with the 2026 Synod Assembly.
There is still time to be part of this project.
Submissions remain open, with the deadline approaching on May 1, 2026.
If you’ve been meaning to submit a recipe, now is the time. Add your voice—and your dish—to this growing table.
