The Great Lutheran Potluck: What’s Always on Your Table?

Every congregation has that one dish.

You know the one—the recipe that shows up at every gathering. The dish people look for before they even sit down. The one that, if it’s missing, someone will ask, “Wait… where is it?”

Across the Grand Canyon Synod, these beloved recipes are part of our shared life together. From Jell-O salads and funeral potatoes to bars, desserts, and crockpot classics, the Lutheran potluck has long been a place of welcome, abundance, and community.

The table in a fellowship hall or church basement is more than just a place to eat—it is where relationships are formed, stories are shared, and care is expressed. Meals appear after worship, during celebrations, and in times of grief. Food becomes a way we show up for one another.

As part of the Rooted at the Table recipe project, connected with the 2026 Synod Assembly, we are inviting you to share the recipes that define your congregation’s life together.

  • What’s the dish your community expects every time?

  • What recipe has become part of your congregation’s identity?

  • What do you bring—or hope someone else brings—when the table is set?

These recipes may be simple, familiar, and well-loved—but they carry meaning. They tell the story of generations gathering, serving, and sharing in Christ’s name.

All submitted recipes will be published online, creating a shared collection of the foods that bring our synod together. A curated selection will also be included in the printed cookbook connected with the 2026 Synod Assembly.

Submissions are open now, and the deadline is May 1, 2026.

Bring your congregation’s classic to the table.
