A Lutheran Potluck Classic

As part of our 2026 Synod Assembly under the theme Rooted in God’s Story, we are creating a community recipe book — Rooted at the Table. Submit your recipe by Friday, May 1, 2026, and learn more here.

Submitted by David Brandfass (Christ Lutheran Church, Sedona)

This creamy red Jell-O dish is a staple of Lutheran potlucks—and a reminder of how traditions evolve.

For decades, David has brought this dish to gatherings, connecting past and present. He also shares a fascinating piece of history: in the early 20th century, Jell-O was a status symbol because it required refrigeration.

Today, it’s simply a beloved part of community life.

Creamy Red Jell-O

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Boiling Water, Boiling

  • 1 Big Box Red Jell-0

  • 2 Cups Ice Cold Water

  • 1 Sm Tub Cool Whipped Topping

Instructions

Make Red Jell-O according to directions on package. Cool until it is starting to set. Let Cool Whip come to room temp while the Jell-O is setting. Now with the paddle attachment on your mixer, slowly mix to the two together. Add Banana or Strawberry if you like. Set in mold or nice dish. Chill to set. Bring to pot lock. Red Jell-O and whip cream. Fondly known as Lutheran Cuisine!

Story

I got this recipe from one of the many Jell-O cookbooks out there. I've brought this to every Lutheran potluck I have attended for the past thirty years. When I served in the midwest I learned that in the 1920's Jell-O was a status symbol that said your farm / home had electricity, because you needed an electric powered refrigerator to bring Jell-O to the Our Lady of Grace Lutheran Church potluck. Who knew?
