New Leadership and A Renewed Vision: Key Takeaways from the ELCA Conference of Bishops Meeting

The ELCA Conference of Bishops recently convened at the Lutheran Center in Chicago, marking a significant gathering where decisions and conversations shaped the direction of the church for the years to come.

One of the most notable decisions was the election of new leadership. Bishop Yehiel Curry of the ELCA Metropolitan Chicago Synod will be assuming the position of chair of the conference. Alongside him, our very own Bishop Deborah K. Hutterer was elected as vice chair. Their term starts on Dec. 1, 2023, taking over from the Rev. Tracie L. Bartholomew and the Rev. Patricia A. Davenport respectively.

ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton presented her insights on the 'Future Church: God's Love Made Real'. A movement that emphasizes the transformative power of God's grace and love in Christ, Bishop Eaton poignantly remarked, "The world doesn't even know it needs to know Jesus."

In addition to these decisions and insights, the conference delved into various topics. These ranged from discussions on the Commission for a Renewed Lutheran Church (CRLC), adapting the church's candidacy process, and ongoing conversations around Holy Communion practices. The meeting also touched upon critical matters such as racial justice, disciplinary concerns of leaders of color, and the pursuit of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion within the church.

As we reflect on the outcomes of this conference, it is clear that the ELCA is not only embracing change but also forging ahead with a vision grounded in Christ's love and grace. With the newly elected leaders, the church is poised to navigate these transformative times with wisdom and commitment.
