Bishop Hutterer: An Invitation to Boldness

As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

As we approach our upcoming Grand Canyon Synod Assembly, I find myself filled with anticipation and gratitude for the opportunity to join with you in reflection, fellowship, and discernment.

Our chosen theme for this year's assembly is "Be Bold in Your Baptism." This serves as a potent reminder of the profound gift and responsibility we have received through our baptism calls. We are reminded that our faith is living, vibrant, and transformative, inviting us to courageously embrace the calling to be vessels of God's work in our world.

The Synod Assembly is an essential occasion for us to come together, not just as individuals or separate congregations, but as the body of Christ. Our gathering is a time to reconnect, to learn from one another, to share our struggles and triumphs, and to discern the path forward in unity and faith. It is during these meetings that we are reminded that we are not alone, but part of a larger, dynamic community of believers, bound together by our common faith and mission.

This year, we gather in a world that continues to face numerous challenges – from societal divisions to environmental crises. In such a context, our theme calls us to 'be bold', encouraging us to step into these conversations and challenges not with fear or despair, but with faith, a sense of wonder, and a commitment to listen and seek common ground. As baptized members of the church, we are called to be bold in our faith, bold in our love for our neighbors, and bold in our commitment to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.

The agenda for our Synod Assembly is rich with opportunities for worship, learning, and action. Those in attendance will have a chance to reflect on our faith through Bible Study with Dr. Bateza, hear ELCA updates from Rev. Sara Cutter, engage in recognitions and celebrations of milestones within our community, and consider the mission spending plan for the coming year. The assembly will also provide opportunities to hear updates from our synod council, vote on key issues, and learn from inspiring speakers such as Sister Angelica “Lika” Macias.

One piece of feedback we consistently hear is the need for open time to mingle and meet new people. The planning team is offering a new and fun experiment in gathering — our ministry night at the Children’s Museum — a unique opportunity for relaxation, fellowship, and inspiration.

If you are a voting member I hope you will be surprised at the ways God is at work in congregations, the Grand Canyon Synod and through Churchwide. If you not a voting member, I encourage you to pray for this assembly gathering. We remember the words of the Apostle Paul to the Ephesians, "I, therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called." May our time at the Synod Assembly be a reflection of this calling and a testament to our shared commitment to the life of the church and the world God so deeply loves.

We gather not only to conduct the business of the church but to be the church – to be the Body of Christ in action, guided by the love of God, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit.

I look forward to seeing those who attend synod assembly, and I pray that our time together will strengthen our bonds of community, deepen our faith, and inspire voting members to share these stories so we all may continue to be bold in our baptism.

Grateful for your boldness,

The Rev. Deborah K. Hutterer
Bishop
Grand Canyon Synod of the ELCA
