Navigating the Paths of Reconciliation: ELCA’s Informative Sessions on Indian Boarding Schools

The ELCA is engaging congregations and individuals this September with its Truth and Healing Movement, focusing on the historical impact and the ongoing implications of U.S. Indian Boarding Schools.

As a significant part of this movement, two enlightening online classes from Vance Blackfox are being offered: “Introduction to the Truth and Healing Movement” on Tuesday, 9/26/2023, 5-6pm PDT/MST, 6-7pm MDT, and “Indian 101” on Thursday, 9/28/2023, 5-7pm PDT/MST, 6-8pm MDT. These classes serve as a pivotal opportunity for learning and understanding, fostering solidarity and support for the Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island.

On September 30, the National Day of Remembrance for Indian Boarding Schools is observed. Supporters are encouraged to wear an orange shirt and share a photo on social media using the hashtags #ELCA #TruthAndHealing and #DayOfRememberance. Participation can be enhanced by purchasing an orange shirt with the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition (NABS) logo.

The ELCA is committed to unraveling its role in the painful history of Indian boarding schools and forging a path of healing and reconciliation through continuous learning and advocacy. A detailed conversation between Vance Blackfox and survivor George McCauley provides deeper insight into the lived experiences of boarding school survivors, as well as this conversation with descendants of Indian Boarding School survivors.
